Before Your Surgery

Proper preparation helps ensure a safe procedure and smooth recovery. Please follow these instructions carefully.

Do not eat or drink anything (including water) for 8 hours before your surgery if you will be receiving IV sedation or general anesthesia

Take your regular medications as directed, unless specifically told otherwise

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with short sleeves for IV access

Remove all jewelry, nail polish, and contact lenses

Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours

Do not smoke for at least 12 hours before surgery

Bring a list of all current medications and supplements

Complete any pre-operative forms provided by our office

After Your Surgery

Following these post-operative instructions will help ensure the best possible healing and recovery.

First 24 Hours

Bite on gauze firmly for 30-45 minutes to control bleeding
Rest with your head elevated on pillows
Apply ice packs: 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off
Do not rinse, spit, or use a straw (can dislodge blood clot)
Take prescribed medications as directed
Eat only soft, cool foods (yogurt, applesauce, smoothies)
Do not smoke or consume alcohol

Days 2-7

Begin gentle salt water rinses (1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water)
Continue soft diet, gradually advancing as comfortable
Keep the surgical site clean with gentle brushing
Continue ice/heat therapy as needed for comfort
Limit physical activity for 3-5 days
Take all prescribed medications as directed

When to Call Us

Severe pain not controlled by medication
Excessive bleeding that doesn't stop with pressure
Signs of infection: fever, increasing swelling, pus
Numbness that persists beyond 24 hours
Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Adverse reaction to medication

Appointment length varies based on the procedure. Consultations typically take 30-45 minutes, while surgical procedures can range from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on complexity.

Will I need someone to drive me home?

Yes, if you receive any sedation beyond local anesthesia. You should not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for 24 hours after sedation.

How soon can I return to work?

Most patients return to desk work within 1-3 days. Physical labor may require 5-7 days off. Dr. Barkin will provide specific guidance based on your procedure.

What should I do if I have an emergency after hours?

Call our office number for after-hours emergency instructions. For life-threatening emergencies, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
